Arko Media Project 2012: Unbound Archive is designed to shed light on the flow of contemporary Korean video art, and seek new ways of contact between Video Art Archive and its viewers, focusing primarily on recent single-channel videos among the Arko collections. This project, in collaboration with the Archive, displays artistic practice through video art screenings, archive exhibitions, seminars, and lectures.
15 artists including selected artists of the Arko Media Competition 2012 such as Kim Dohee, Kim Tae Eun, Kim Heaji, Noh Gihun, Lee Geumhong, moojin_bro., Park Minha, Park Sungyeon, Shin Jung-kyun, Lim Sun Hee, Jang Gyu-jeong, and Jang Jong Wan; and artists who joined the production of the Arko Media Critique Series such as Rho Jae Oon, An Jungju, and Jung Eun Young displays single-channel videos and archive materials related to their concerns. The exhibition presents a broad spectrum of artists: leading Korean artists who have consistently worked in video art and rising artists who debuted as media artists. With 20 pieces of animations, documentaries, dramas, and graphic videos showing diversity of video and media art, the Arko Art Center illuminates aspects of Korean video art from a critical perspective and offers multifarious interpretations of video art.
In the subtitle Unbound Archive, ‘unbound’ refers to a free state, like a book not bound with a cover. Unbound Archive forms an accidental forum created through incessant clashes of hidden histories, memories, thoughts, and contentious issues through a process of communicating with art. They have nothing but disquieting individual events scattered in cultural, social, and political contexts. All archive materials on display at the show such as sketches, working plans, memos, interview materials, and photographs of scenes work as decisive clues for interpretations rather than retaining some value as works of art. Viewers may join the creation of new discourse as active interpreters and use the extended archive to collect, preserve, share, and signify fragments of stories that may be disregarded and extinguished.
The project aims to find a process of communicating with viewers, departing from the simple way of screening and the unilateral way of perception. It also reviews the diverse development of experimentation with media art through such programs as Artist e-Portfolio, which compiles archive materials of participating artists in a form of an e-book; opening seminars that celebrate the publication of Arko Media Critique Series; lectures by Laurence Alary, a curator of ARGOS: Center for Art and Media; and a presentation of special works recommended by Arko and ARGOS.

<<2012 아르코미술관 미디어 프로젝트: 언바운드 아카이브>>는 아르코미술관의 대표 컬렉션 중 하나인 싱글채널비디오 신작을 중심으로 동시대 한국 비디오아트의 흐름을 조망하고 영상예술 아카이브와 관객과의 새로운 접속 방식을 모색하고자 한다. 아카이브 연계 사업을 통한 예술적 실천을 수행하는 이번 프로젝트는 비디오 아트 스크리닝, 아카이브 전시, 세미나, 강연 등으로 구성된다.
<2012 아르코미디어 작품공모> 선정작가인 김도희, 김태은, 김혜지, 노기훈, 리금홍, 무진브라더스, 박민하, 박성연, 신정균, 임선희, 장규정, 장종완과 <아르코미디어 비평 총서 시리즈> 제작에 참여한 노재운, 안정주, 정은영 등 총 15인의 작가들은 싱글채널비디오 작품과 작업 과정에서 생산되거나 작가의 관심사와 연관된 아카이브 자료를 함께 전시한다. 참여작가들은 비디오 매체를 중심으로 꾸준한 활동을 펼치고 있는 한국의 대표적인 작가부터 이번 전시에서 미디어 아티스트로서 데뷔하는 신진작가에 이르는 다양한 스펙트럼을 갖는다. 애니메이션, 다큐멘터리, 드라마, 그래픽 영상 등 영상 매체예술의 다양성과 복합성을 보여주는 20여 점의 작품들을 통해 아르코미술관은 한국 비디오아트의 양상을 비평적 시각으로 조명하고 시대정신의 표상으로서 비디오아트에 대한 다각적 해석의 자리를 마련하고자 한다.
프로젝트의 부제 ‘언바운드 아카이브unbound archive’에서 언바운드unbound는 책이나 종이 등이 제본되어 있지 않은, 무언가로부터 자유로운 상태를 뜻한다. 따라서 ‘언바운드 아카이브’는 문화적·사회적·정치적 컨텍스트 사이에 흩어져 아직은 불안정한 개별적 사건에 불과하면서도 예술과의 소통 과정에서는 숨겨진 역사와 기억, 사고, 논쟁거리 등을 끊임없이 충돌시키며 빚어내는 우연적 장을 형성한다. 이 전시에서 소개될 스케치, 작업계획서, 메모, 인터뷰 자료, 현장 사진 등 모든 아카이브 자료는 하나의 예술작품으로서 가치를 갖기 보다는 작품을 재해석 할 수 있는 결정적 단서로서 작용할 것이다. 관람객들은 무시되거나 사라질 수 있는 이야기 조각들을 모으고, 보존하고, 공유하고, 의미화할 수 있는 확장된 아카이브extended archive 이자 능동적 해석자로서 새로운 담화 창조에 참여할 수 있다.
이번 프로젝트는 스크리닝이라는 단순한 전시형식과 일방적인 지각방식에서 탈피하여 관람객과의 소통 과정을 적극 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 밖에도 참여작가의 아카이브를 전자책E-book 형식으로 묶은 <아티스트 e-포트폴리오>를 비롯하여 <아르코미디어 비평 총서 시리즈> 출간을 기념하는 오프닝 세미나와 유럽의 대표적인 미디어 센터 중 하나인 아르고스 미디어센터ARGOS Centre for Art and Media의 큐레이터 로렌스 알라리Laurence Alary의 강연, 아르코 & 아르고스 추천 특별상영 등의 프로그램을 마련하여 동시대 미디어아트를 둘러싼 다양한 전개와 실험을 확인하고자 한다.
